CGI VS Stop-Motion

Posted: July 3, 2013 in Movies

I haven’t had time for reviews on the other part of this blog, Full Metal Celluloid, but here’s one question I have about movies over the past few years, especially about the big scifi action type: Will CGI continue its godawful drift to laziness/incompetence so that we’ll have to resurrect Ray Harryhausen’s stop-motion technique for that wonderfully blended illusion of fantasy/realism? Just look at the CGI-in-your-face “After Earth” with Will Smith & Son Inc (did they do those effects on an Apple 2 with a 5-1/4 floppy disk?). Watch just about any Big Effects movie today and then go to the original “King Kong” and “The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad” for inspiration.
