Whereas Marcel Duchamp used hisFountain to question the nature of art and the spaces in which it is shown, the Serpentine’s exhibition asks the other obvious question: what happens to the urinal — or some other piece of everyday matter that we barely glance at — when you remove it from the “real” world and place it on a pedestal?…” Here. Ah, very interesting concept. But don’t forget you can also create the same effect by removing something from the real world to another part of the real world, say putting a urinal in the kitchen. Context is everything.
