For the category of worst mass killer in history the winner is…Mr Mao Tse Tung (aka, the Chairman), a man greatly admired by such prestigious media organs as The New York Times and The Washington Post. Our thanks to historian Frank Dikötter, a professor at Hong Kong University, who has specialized in the four year period between 1958 and ’62, who has put the figure at a staggering 45 million. Not only did Mao know how to create a really good famine to kill off the nasty peasants, he was also a great torturer and executioner. Here.

Mao in the House?

I don’t always agree with Glenn Beck. He’s too dramatic for me (that crying game has to stop) and the fact that he takes solace with the Bible, for example, leaves me non-plussed. But when he unearths some zingers about the opposition he’s right on target and is one of the few on Big TV that’s not afraid to speak his mind.
If you’re interested in reading about Mao start off with Mao: The Unknown Story. Mao was a sadist and torturer, and a murderer worse than Stalin or even Pol Pot (well, maybe not as bad as good ol’ Pol). Beck is right. Praising Mao is no better than praising Hitler. Both had political philosphies that led to mass extermination. The crux of that philosophy was this–end justifies means.
(Note: I believe other politicians have quoted Mao for one reason or another–but not as one of their favorite political philosophers (which, after all, is the key point; by all means correct me if I’m wrong.)
