Interested in the history of Chinese cinema in the Grand Banana Republic? Try Hollywood Chinese (includes a short clip).

UPDATE: June/2013. Just read a great book on a Chinese-American actress’s life behind the stereotyping. “Anna May Wong: From Laundryman’s Daughter to Hollywood Legend” (Graham Russell Gao Hodges). Did you know she was the star of the first Hollywood film in technicolor? Did you know that Hollywood had a code that, though a Chinese could play a character married to or romantically involved with a Caucasian character they could not kiss on screen? It’s a good book to read along with Iris Chang’s “Chinese In America: A Narrative History.”
