The NY Times reports that “The Vatican is quietly conducting two sweeping investigations of American nuns, a development that has startled and dismayed nuns who fear they are the targets of a doctrinal inquisition…” So what are nuns doing that they need to be investigated by the Vatican? Moonlighting as go go girls (it would look funny with all those dollar bills hanging out of a habit), engaging in threesomes (or more), becoming members of The God is Dead Club…? No, the gist of it is here: “In the last four decades since the reforms of the Second Vatican Council, many American nuns stopped wearing religious habits, left convents to live independently and went into new lines of work: academia and other professions, social and political advocacy and grass-roots organizations that serve the poor or promote spirituality. A few nuns have also been active in organizations that advocate changes in the church like ordaining women and married men as priests…” (By the way, I don’t live very far from a huge ocean front nunnery here in New Jersey; the women wear discreet skirts and blouses, and walk in the salty sunshine.)

As muh as possible American nuns should ignore this Roman power-play.This is a chance for a strong element in the local church to reject a centralizing authority that goes against the spirit of Vatican 11
Its about time the Vatican did something. So many nuns today reject so many basic Church principles and laws. They give meaning to the word “cafeteria Catholic.” So many of them practice new age rituals and all sorts of pagan “worship” that an investigation from the Vatican is long overdue. I’m not saying that all nuns who don’t wear a habit do this because I know some very wonderful sisters who don’t wear the habit but the point of the matter is that the habit is a sign of modesty, conformity, and obedience to Holy Mother Church. When these women make their vows, they become the Spouse of Christ, therefore, they are to be different from the world. The habit acts as a sign of their calling. Its apart of their job as the religious of the Church to represent the Church to the world. To save souls! The habit acts as a quiet evangelism.
